Weekend Activities in Qingpu Children’s Centre

On the morning of March 7, 2015, the weather was cloudy, but the children from Youdao Qingpu Children’s Center felt particularly warm in their hearts. Today the teachers and students from Changnin International School not only gave them a vivid lesson but also became their good friends.
The course topic was "how to cross the road.” The children immediately said the topic was too simple and that their teacher had already taught them red means stop, green means go, and yellow means pause. But when the volunteers asked the children to express these ideas in English the classroom fell silent and the children looked to their teachers for guidance.
Volunteers took out prepared papers with English pictures and words and distributed them to every child. They told them to cut the words out one by one, and to see if they understood the meanings. The children carefully cut all of their words and pictures out and when they were done the volunteers let kids paint the color of the traffic lights to prepare for the next game - cross the road.
Volunteers drew zebra crossings and lanes and put the children’s’ pictures as the traffic lights. Children then decided to go or stop according to the color of the pictures raised by the volunteers. During the games, some of the children’s’ mothers were attracted by their children’s enthusiasm and joined in the activity.
After the course, the children's passion continued to grow. They held the volunteers’ hands to do activities together. Some played football, some played with sandbags, and some played chess. The classroom and the yard were filled with volunteers and children's laughter.
The activities always go by so quickly. The children did not want to see the volunteers leave. Today the children not only had fun, but also learned valuable safety lessons.

Qingpu Activity Center Performance for the Children Activity

At 11:30am on March 15th 2015, a group of Swedish volunteers from a charity drama organization arrived Youdao’s Qingpu Children’s activity center for a performance. They checked the site, set up the stage, and put on their make up. The local security guard, Mr. Xie helped a lot in the events setup by picking up the volunteers, moving the material, and resolving a wiring issue.
The migrant children and some neighbors sat down with three university volunteers to enjoy the show.
There were not as many children at the performance due to cold weather, but this did not affect the performers at all, who still devoted themselves and performed with the highest level of enthusiasm. Although the performers only wore shirts, they still sweat a lot during the playing.
Their funny, lovely, and humorous gestures and facial expressions made the audience laugh loudly.
When the play came to the end, the audience cheered and applauded the performers. They also spent some time teaching the kids different dances. It was a great moment for everyone involved.
Even the show ended, the children were still curious about the stage and props. They couldn’t control the props but touched them with their little figures. They asked the performers to dance with them again and took pictures with them.
A special thanks to Maja and her team (Wang Jiannan, Liu Siyu, and Björn Dahlman) for their great performance for the children. They have their full time job, so they have to sacrifice lots of their spare time to design the drama, practice, and prepare materials. They then spend their weekends giving performances to migrant children. They told us that they always feel a great sense of pleasure and satisfaction when they see the kids’ happy and cheering faces.

Weekend Activities in Qingpu Children’s Centre

On February 7, 2015, 12 student volunteers from the Chang Ning International School traveled to You Dao’s Qingpu community center to play games with the children who were not able to return home for winter vacation.
The volunteers brought 3D color clay and worked with the Qingpu children using their imaginations to produce beautiful works of art. The children also ran outside and played tag and also engaged in a competitive game of soccer.
After the activities ended, the volunteers shared cakes and biscuits with the children. The volunteers were very happy to eat, play, and laugh with all of the happy children.
