2014 You Dao Summer Camp

From July 7th to the 18th, Youdao held the Youdao Summer Camp at the Beiyaowan and Qingpu Activity Centers.  The children were divided into three groups depending on age and each group had a teacher counselor.  Each day at 8:30am, the volunteer teachers arrived at the activity centers to greet the children.  Then everyone gathered in the classroom and the teachers led the children in arts and crafts activities while explaining the activities for the day.  Each day had different activities that included: English classes, computer classes, games, activities classes, baking classes, ukulele music lessons, and drama classes.  The children were very happy and demonstrated a very positive attitude towards learning.
On Monday and Friday, the counselors held small opening and closing ceremonies for the camp activities.  During the closing ceremonies the children, teachers, and counselors all expressed their feelings and expressed how much they had learned.  Small souvenirs were given to remember the event.  The Qingpu children also performed a dance called “Lily” expressing their gratitude for the counselors’ hard work.
The Summer Camp was organized by the Shanghai International Community Service in coordination with You Dao Foundation. High school volunteers came from Concordia International School, Shanghai High School, and the American School in Pudong.  The youngest volunteer was Mady, who is only 12 years old.  Mady came every day and was responsible for some of the largest activities and drama classes.  She became a big sister and good friend to all of the children.  The Summer Camp was organized by teacher Rita, curriculum consultant David, and high school students.  Overall, there were 19 international volunteers, one You Dao volunteer, four Shanghai University volunteers, and two University of Politics volunteers.  Overall there were 64 migrant children taking part in the summer camp, ranging in age from 6 to 14 years old.
We would like to thank all of the volunteers, teachers, and students for their hard work.  They sacrificed their time and summer vacation to help these children.  Thank you so much!
